As you read more about us you'll find that what we do and what we stand for are definately worth the time, energy, and money of all involved. I was once a student of this same club at the same school where I'm now teaching. It had such a profound, life-long impact on me that I based my career on it.
I'm a teacher in a middle school with grades 6-8. I am also the sponsor/organizer for The Wildlife Society, an organization aimed at taking inner-city youth outside the concrete city limits and aquainting them with science in the real world. The large majority of these students have never been outside of the greater Dallas/Ft. Worth area, which makes it even more difficult for them to relate to the things they're supposed to learn in the science classroom. We go camping, count Bald Eagles in the wild, fishing, hiking, exploring, rock climbing, and later in the year, white water rafting. The trips and equipment cost money. The majority of club members "work" around school for teachers and staff members grading papers, cleaning rooms, decorating walls, etc. to help offset the cost of the trip for their parents who are already financially tight. However, we need tents. Tents that sleep 4 people! We have been trying to borrow and scrounge up tents but it is becoming more difficult. By allowing the Wildlife Society to own a set of tents it relieves long-term costs and allows us to redirect funds into more detailed, scientifc trips. These students are getting hands-on experience and developing a love of nature and science. Both are invaluable in today's society and would not be instilled in these students without experiences provided by the Wildlife Society. If you feel called to help us out, thank you.
