Last year I posted a proposal on Donors Choose for my third grade class to receive a subscription to a magazine called ?The Weekly Reader.? My proposal was funded and every child in my class received their very own copy of the magazine on a weekly basis. It was a wonderful experience for us all! The students enjoyed the articles that were in these magazines and remembered them throughout the year. It was fascinating to see the children make connections between the things they read in ?The Weekly Reader? in November to other articles they've read in March and May! In light of this phenomenal success, I would like my third graders this year to have the same learning opportunities.
Since I teach in a low-income school in Brooklyn, many of my students cannot contribute money to school related projects. I discovered, in my two years of teaching, that many of my students had trouble bringing in $5 for the plays that we were going to attend, and parents approached me about not having enough money and needing help. That's why I decided to write a proposal once again for these magazines instead of asking my students to bring in the money for subscriptions.
This magazine can be a really great resource for our classroom. It not only includes articles on topics that the students will be interested in (such as sports and the lives of children across the country), but it can also be a great tool for studying Science and Social Studies. The subscription to this magazine includes a guide for teachers, which provides activities and lessons that can be used along with the magazine. The magazine can even be used for test preparation, which is a huge part of our third grade curriculum in New York City. All these uses for the magazine are in addition to the fact that the students will be engaging in meaningful independent reading!
Your donation can put a copy of this magazine into the hands of every one of my students on a weekly basis. It will provide an entire year's worth of learning and reading practice. It will also help in motivating the students to read!
