My Students

I have the unique privilege to work with students who are all spending time in a juvenile detention center. Due to the transient nature of my students I don't know who, or how many students I will have on any given day. Through this my colleagues and I work diligently to foster a love of reading in our students.

My students grow to be readers; and through reading, lifelong learners.

Though my students come from tough backgrounds and have radically different life experiences from myself; we strive to understand each other on a human level every day.

My Project

Through a class study of "The Wave" by Tod Strasser I hope to teach my students how to look at others differences, acknowledge them, and accept them. We will read the book together as a class and explore the themes and symbols through class discussion.

I'm hoping that this novel exposes my students to new ideas and concepts that have yet to enter their minds.

I hope they see how hard it is for the main character to stand up for her ideals and beliefs through the opposition she faces from her peers, and how the opposition only takes hold because they can't see the bad within themselves.
