My Students

I teach a wonderful group of 7th-grade students in a rural part of Georgia very close to a major university. My students struggle with reading and writing but have a huge desire to become better students. Many of my students have learning disabilities or diagnosed attention disorders but that is not preventing them from doing their best in my social studies classroom. They are curious about the world and are engaged in the lessons and activities we do in class.

My Project

I am requesting copies of the novel, A Long Walk to Water. Our students have been learning about Africa and how unequal access to water impacts daily lives. The students will also benefit from reading a novel in class and improving their reading and foreshadowing skills.

Ultimately, through this unit and the novel, I want the students to learn not to take aspects of their life for granted.

Learning the story of Nya and Salva will help them realize that no matter what is happening in their life, it could be drastically different if they did not have access to clean water.
