My students need laptops to supplement class lessons. We found out that due to the current volcanic eruption, more students may be forced to work from home to do school work (when ash hinders driving).

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live on the rural, volcanic side of Hawaii's "Big Island." Our classes are full inclusion classes. In other words, every class accommodates children with special needs, never isolating kids into separate tracks. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds including but not limited to Native Hawaiian, Filipino, Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander. Because of the isolation of our island, many have never traveled to a city, many have never left the island or the state of Hawaii. Parents and grandparents work in agriculture, ranching, fishing, the sciences, the tourism industry, education, food services, and more.
"Learning through Volcano's unique natural and cultural resources to become creative global citizens." This is our school's mission and vision!
Families who choose to send their children to our school are looking for greater opportunities for their children in a small-school environment with easy access to Volcanoes National Park.
My Project
We have had wonderful success supplementing our core math curriculum with online tools such as Desmos graphing calculator, Code.org lessons, Khan Academy lessons, and i-Ready lessons, BUT we do not have enough computers for all our students!
When we had to set up a remote site for students who were hindered from coming to school due to ash fall, we needed to provide that group of students with computers and internet capability to supplement their math lessons.
We don't know what the volcanic eruption has in store for us this upcoming year, but we sure would like to be prepared!
Because of two years of DonorsChoose gifts, I have been equipped with seven extra Chromebooks so that we now have close to a 2-1 ratio of computers to students, but my goal is to have a 1-1 ratio of computers to students. I share my three DonorsChoose iPads with Digital Media and Yearbook students all year long. I share my DonorsChoose Chromebooks with science and English Language Arts as well. This will be no different! These supplies help our whole middle school, not just my classroom. Having more Chromebooks will help us get closer to our goal of having one laptop for every middle school student at The Volcano School of Arts & Sciences.
