This is not only a school, but a community - a family. Anywhere there is a need, the faculty and staff rise up collectively to meet it. I say this sincerely.
We are a culturally diverse group; many students are economically disadvantaged and other students have parents that must work late and those students are here from early AM to early evening.
For a few students school breakfast and lunch are their most nutritious meals of the day. For others, because of parents' busy schedules, they have their school meals and a hurried grab and go dinner.
My focus is to raise awareness and instruct students about healthy nutrition and good food choices, and to raise awareness of where our most healthy foods comes from. Therefore in the spring of 2018 I established our school's vegetable garden. Our motto is (like our students) "START SMALL, GROW BIG!"
My intention is to expand our garden, increase its use as an outdoor classroom, and ultimately have our students have a real farm to table experience. Thank you.
My Project
Our School Garden was established in the spring of 2018.
We took an ordinary patch of grass, and raised funds through raffles and donations (seed money, literally) and created something wonderful out of nothing.
The students took the funds we raised and purchased 6 yards of soil and seeds, and thus was established the School Vegetable Garden!
The garden project has the potential to change the lives of our students. By becoming an outdoor classroom, they learned rudimentary finance literacy by raising funds and calculating costs. Science is incorporated by having the students germinate the seeds and observe and measure growth. They improve awareness of health and physical education by laying out garden, turning and digging in the soil and planting. Very importantly, the psycho/social aspect of working together and seeing their project come to fruition is established.
Our goal eventually is to have a farm to table experience with our students.
