Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have a unique subset of students with over 75% qualifying for free and reduced lunches.
Due to a majority of their upbringings most of our students have not had the opportunity to be raised in a language rich environment and struggle with literacy.
My courses specifically prepare students for software certifications that advance their career and earning potentials. We're preparing these students for life after high school and they need all of the help I can provide to be successful.
My Project
Each year I prepare my students for five different software based certifications depending on their course topic and level. Between the four Adobe programs and Autodesk Maya, I expose my students to over 1000 content specific vocabulary words to ready them for their certification exam. It is a herculean task to ensure my kids, who already struggle with literacy, learn and retain even just the required vocabulary to be successful.
The ultimate purpose of this project is to make content vocabulary accessible to my students.
Teaching and reinforcing vocabulary involves word walls, games, visuals and manipulatives. With a small format laminator I'll be able to create higher quality resources that will last year over year. This will allow me to focus on expanding the resources I provide them instead of having to spend time reprinting, cutting and preparing supplies.
