This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 4th and 5th students with autism spectrum disorder and related disabilities. My students vary in their physical, cognitive, and intellectual abilities. My students are focusing their time in school on communication and social skills as well as independent life skills life; that looks different for every student. We work with each student individually to help them communicate during academic task and their wants and needs, self regulate, and appropriate social interactions and self care.
My Project
When students use flexible seating, it allows the student to focus on social skills, academic, or independent work task. Alternative seating provides the student with a choice and, or comfort, therefore, a greater attention to task. The iPad will be used as an assistive technology device that will allow for proficient 21st century communication. All other items will assist and be used for affectively communicating in real world scenarios.
Students with fine motor deficits and communication needs will be able to communicate via the iPad through Tobi Dynavox which is a voice output software that the student uses via picture symbols.
All other materials will be used for effective fine motor communication which students will need to function independently in the real world.
