Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My little scholars range from 3 to 5 years old and live in the Glenwood Springs, Colorado area. This is their second home in a dual-language (English & Spanish), experiential learning school. Coming to me from families of all different cultural background and economic status, roughly half of my students are on scholarship or receive assistance from the school district and/or community programs.
Each child is bright and brilliant in their own unique way and my passion is to ensure they each enjoy a learning experience filled with delight, good health, discovery and inspiration.
We spend time every day participating in group activities which explore STEM concepts, early literacy prep, development of fine motor/gross motor skills and social emotional skills. Kindergarten readiness is a priority alongside a strong introduction to the Spanish language. Understanding and respect for the environment, the basics of good nutrition and physical health are consistently presented in our curriculum.
My Project
My students range in age from 2.5 to 5 years and have drastically different learning profiles. A strong sand/water/sensory interest area allows me to accommodate all these different learning styles, keeping my students engaged and allowing them to have the sensory and movement experiences they crave. My interpersonal (preferring group activities) and intrapersonal (solo) learners are accommodated depending on the activity and materials presented.
I have a high percentage of kinesthetic learners in my class and am clearly seeing a need for a well equipped and diversified sensory/sand & water table.
These donations will allow me to construct an all inclusive sensory play area.Creating a safe area is a top priority with items like the absorbent floor mat to keep children from slipping on wet or slick floors. Whenever possible I have chosen items which will last for years to come.Play sands will encourage fine motor skills with digging, raking, sorting and sifting as well as open up an understanding of colors with color mixing. Beads, buttons, small blocks, marbles, pom poms and small shells will work to develop cognitive skills as activities will have the children counting, sorting, organizing and matching. The water marbles, kidfetti and kinetic sand will aid in the development of social emotional and language skills as the children are asked to describe the materials, ask questions and exchange ideas and observations with their classmates. This area is an essential component to my preschool curriculum. It will be used daily and materials changed often to keep the experience fresh.
