Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I constantly find my 11th and 12th grade chemistry and physics students asking me why they have to take challenging courses that they do not need in order to graduate. As a teacher in an urban high school in a low-income community where many of my students will be the first in their families to attend college, I find it a challenge to counteract the pervading mindset of doing just enough to get by and to demonstrate and explain to my students that true success relies heavily on the challenges they confront and exceeding even the highest expectations. As a result, I have made it a priority to engage my students in learning and in seeing tangible success in the classroom in order to expect more of themselves academically.
Unfortunately, the reality of today's hard economic times is taking a toll on the resources available in my classroom. In order to deliver engaging lessons in a format that my students will see in college and to prepare them for the future requires an LCD projector. With a projector, my students can enhance their understanding through videos and online applications that a standard chalkboard lesson can not demonstrate. Furthermore, engaging in a PowerPoint style lecture further prepares students for the lecture style that they will experience once they leave high school and enter college. Because preparing our students for the future is just as high a priority as engaging students in science, having an LCD projector opens the door for much more engaging lessons.
By funding this project, you will be providing students with a resource that many take for granted. Furthermore, you will take a huge part in preparing my students for the technological demands of the future.
