This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our K-8 school serves students who are a very diverse group of learners. As an Arts Specialist, I have the privilege of working with all the students in the building K-8. We have approximately six hundred students enrolled in our school.
As a second-year teacher at this school, I found that the students greatly benefited from the art projects incorporated into the productions.
The students work in a fully inclusive environment that fosters a positive learning and creative environment. One of the students said " I wish we could have drama everyday of the week, I feel confident here! I know that so many students use drama to excel and feel confident in the arts. I believe in each and every one of them.
My Project
Our amazing, fifth and sixth graders will put on an adapted presentation of the beloved classic Wizard of Oz! This is only the second year of a full drama program at the school and our students are very excited. We would like to start building a costume wardrobe. Last year, we put on a production of the Lion King with one hundred percent recycled homemade costumes. We would like to look more professional for this projection. The stage is set we just need to dress it up! My students have worked on lines and elevated their voices from a whisper to a roar, in some cases. We represent the Trotter pop kids and we will follow the Yellow Brick Road and ease on down to a successful production in March of this coming year.
