Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Being a library media specialist, I get the honor of teaching every grade level in the school. My students range in age from 5 to 12 years old, and every single one of them breathes life into the library media center.

As a Title I school in southern Florida, the vast majority of my students come from low-income households.

Many students are in foster care or are even forced to battle homelessness. These factors, however, have no effect on the positivity and enthusiasm they bring to the media center. My students are eager to innovate and anxious to become better readers. They adore interacting with technology and would love the opportunity to do it more of it. They are creative problem-solvers and lively conversationalists.

I have never laughed or smiled as much as when I'm in the presence of one of my passionate kindergarten classes. I have never pondered a new perspective or been challenged in my ways of thinking as much as when I'm with my inquisitive fifth graders. Each of my 600+ students crafts a distinct identity with their storytelling, information literacy, and digital citizenship - we just need your help to continue our growth!

My Project

Hoping to greatly boost literacy at my school, I will be kickstarting a new reading incentive program this year! Reading Bingo is a program that encourages students to read across genres and to share their reading experiences with others.

My students tend to associate reading with state tests or assignments, but I am determined for them to discover the magic that lives between the covers of a book.

They see various texts come to life during every read aloud in class, and I want them to realize that they can create those experiences for themselves. I truly believe that the hardest step with reading is the first one: picking up the book and giving it a chance. This is where the "treasures" are essential, especially for my reluctant readers. Each grade has a completely customized set of 6 bingo cards with age-appropriate prompts that guide them to various types of books. One box might say, "Read a book where the main character is an animal", while another says "Read a book out loud to someone younger than you." When they read the book, the student writes the title in the box. When the student completes a row of boxes, they get a BINGO!

Each bingo earns a prize and advances the student to the next level chart. The program takes place throughout the entire school year! My shopping cart is filled with the prizes for each level for my 600+ students participating in the program. I hope to incentivize them to start their reading journeys and let the books do the rest!
