My students need more news articles on current events, such as the types of articles in TIME for Kids.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our new Common Core standards require students to analyze text and create an argument using proof from that text. What better way to do that than using a current event news article?
I have a diverse population in my classroom.
Some of them come from middle class families who have many life experiences, however most of them are from low income families with few opportunities to experience life outside their city. Fortunately, we are a No Excuses University school where our students are all preparing themselves for college. My students get so excited learning about the world around them by reading about current events. Learning about current events and discussing them, shrinks the gap and helps bring down barriers between my students.
My Project
Time for Kids is a children's newspaper written at their reading level. It will enable all my students to read about topics and events important to their lives today. Time for Kids not only provides each student with their own weekly newspaper, but the subscription will provide online access to videos related to each edition, Smart Board activities (including pop up vocabulary and interactive maps and graphs), audio read alouds, a teacher's guide and quizzes for each edition. Time for Kids is also aligned to our new Common Core standards.
This project is important for my students because my students need to have access to important, interesting information at their reading levels.
The variety that Time for Kids offers with a subscription will give all kids access to the wonderful information in each addition.
Students reading significantly below grade level will get the information scaffolded through the audio read aloud, video and Smart Board activities. We can do SO much with such a simple purchase!
