My Safari Scholars are wild...about learning that is! They are especially excited to read. Their favorite part of the day are when we get to read aloud and opportunities to partner read. We currently conduct our read aloud activities and many center activities on the tile floor.
My children are very diverse.
My classroom is 98% ESL and my kids come from every country imaginable! We represent the Congo, Burma, Afghanistan, China, Thailand, Ethiopia, Nepal and more. My school houses many students that are currently in need of refugee services. Many of the kids have only been in the country for 1 or 2 years and they are excited to learn and are excited to be in class every single day. Their eyes light up at a new book. My kids have an unparalleled passion for learning and are very appreciative for every single opportunity to learn. Although they deal with countless circumstances outside of the classroom and often times cannot understand, literacy serves as a bridge for them and a classroom carpet is a visual of literacy as a bridge.
My Project
The vision for my safari scholars is to have a space where their imaginations can run wild. With a classroom carpet they would have a safe space to let pictures and words speak to their imaginations. I would like for my kids to become proficient readers even though we are working on the beginning blocks of literacy. This begins with them having a love for reading.
I would like for them to not only be comfortable reading but for them to look forward to being able to partner read, cuddle up with a good book and look forward to when I read books aloud. School is often the only times where my children get the opportunity to read in English and a classroom carpet would truly give them the reading experience.
A classroom rug would truly take my classroom to another level.
Donations to this request will make the biggest difference for 24 young readers who will remember the time they read reading and exploring on their classroom carpet. Reading time becomes not only fun time but a safe learning space. A love for lifelong reading emerges from recollections of being lost in a book and building those essential literacy skills.
