This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have 3 classes of approximately 20 scholars with diverse learning styles. Our school is known as “Kid University” and each class represents a university. At Midway we recognize them as scholars and teachers as professors. We strive to expose and motivate them daily because most of their home conditions aren’t ideal. Creating an environment conducive for learning has always been a major deal for me but now I feel a conducive environment should acccomodate their individual learning styles all the way down to their seating.
My Project
The classroom environment is the one of the most important parts of any child's journey through school. I believe that enhancing the environment by using bean bag seats will motivate scholars to do their best work. The home life of many of our scholars doesn't offer them the academic enriched, quiet, comfortable, stable environment they need and desire but that doesn't mean they don't deserve it. As the curriculum changes, technology advances, and teaching becomes more student-centered; it's only logical that the classroom environment meets the individual needs of scholars where it affects them the most--their seats. The addition of bean bag seats to the classroom seating would definitely meet individual scholar needs. The clip boards are necessary for students who choose not to sit at a traditional desk but will still need to write and participate in lessons. The clipboard will serve as their desk and allow them to work comfortably.
By donating to our project, flexible seating would not only enhance the classroom environment but help improve and increase their focus and academic achievement.
Scholars focus will shift from me, me, me, to the academic material at hand and increase their desire to learn because needs will be meet upon entering the classroom. I experienced the difference flexible seating can make within my own classroom. I went from correcting minor behavior issues to providing positive feedback on completed assignments all because a scholar had flexible seating. It wasn't the norm for the class but it worked for him. I have a classroom couch that the scholars love and I feel that in this upcoming school year I will offer flexible seating throughout the entire classroom.
