Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I enjoy my time teaching in a 5th-grade classroom. It is refreshing and motivating to see the growth the kids make at this point of their lives. We are a Title I school in San Francisco. It is a K-8 school. We have seen many of the same families and watched these kids grow up. It has a high level of students who are English Language Learners.
Our class is expected to learn through inquiry and research, focusing on project-based learning and literature.
Fifth grade is an important year for my students, and they are doing more work than ever. They have homework and reading assignments nightly. Sometimes it is difficult for them to adjust, but the school's strong sense of community makes it a little easier.
My Project
Fifth graders are in the midst of a growth spurt. They are also at a critical social awareness crossroad. They are always hungry, but often skip school lunch to spent time talking with peers. Other times, they come to school hungry regardless of eating breakfast.
It is impossible to keep up with the snacking demands of an adolescent.
Whenever we have snacks, they are appreciative and more focused. It literally turns into Hunger Games when the boys all spy the last five apples and two breakfast bars in the snack bin.
The water bottles are necessary because often students reuse plastic bottles not meant for reuse. They squeeze, crush and poke holes in the bottles to serve their needs. Providing a basic water bottle for students will be safer and quieter.
