Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ask a child to name a rapper and they know the answer immediately. Now ask them about Isaac Newton, Archimedes, or Leonhard Euler and you can not imagine the blank stares you will get. I intend to expand my previous project to primary grade students. We had great success in my recent 5th grade class
I work with 20-25 students in grade 3.
My school is located in an urban area that has been plagued by crime. My students seem to know more about, fighting, stealing and drugs than they do about reading, writing and arithmetic. As an educator I strive every day to show them something more. We work as a group to create a safe learning environment where each student can learn their purpose as an individual. Once the environment has been created, each day is filled with constant learning and discussion. Each day we explore and analyze our progress towards individual goals. One of those goals is developing our skills as mathematical thinkers.
My Project
I will use a daily math activities calendar to start the day reinforcing previous skills. The partner and group math games I am requesting will be utilized during our mathematics learning lab. Students will rotate through centers that are designed to enhance their math skills while I meet with individuals and small groups to catch the cracks in their learning before they become holes. The requested materials include math learning centers and games that require a strong knowledge base in math and help to develop math skills. The materials also include independent activities that allow children to explore math and self correct. This allows the students to grow without developing a fear or anxiety about math. Solving problems with mathematics requires a wide range of skills and abilities. Mathematical thinkers have deep mathematical knowledge, general reasoning abilities, expectations that math will be useful, and skills for communicating a solution.
As an educator, I help students think mathematically and to use mathematical thinking to solve problems.
This type of thinking supports science, technology, economic life and development in an economy. Students learn to reason, create models and make connections between ideas. Students will realize just how "popular" a mathematician can be.
