My students need quality basic school supplies: a binder with tab dividers, pencils, erasers, a pencil case, loose leaf paper, and highlighters in order to have the basics for learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are mostly African American, with some blends and other ethnicities, too. Though most of my students come from the lower rungs of the socioeconomic ladder, they are working hard to get the education needed to be successful in our world.
If I had to choose one word to describe my students, it would be resilient.
They work hard daily, are ready to learn, and don't let setbacks hold them back. They are amazingly clever and always interesting. I am grateful every single day to be able to work with some of the finest minds in the city.
My Project
My students need the very basic school supplies most people take for granted. They really don't have reasoable binders, pencil pouches, and paper. They are constantly losing hand outs and notes. They are anxious about not having the ability to run to the store and buy highlighters, and would rather cause distraction than admit that there isn't enough money in the family budget to get supplies for school.
If I were able to give every student in my class all the basics, then we'd get a lot more work done.
Kids would be less embarrassed because the supplies would be given to everyone. Having the tools to learn and practice is important... and alleviating the stress of having to figure out how to beg supplies from others would allow students to concentrate on the important stuff: learning.
