These fictional short stories of the war in Vietnam, blurs the line between fiction and truth. Intriguing and beautifully written, it offers much for our classes to discuss and presents the idea that truth is an elusive thing, one not necessarily caught through dates and facts. It's so valuable.
My Students are hard working, caring, and respectful.
It is a reflection of the community. Though not an affluent area, our school shines in how students are connected with one another and take pride in the school and community. Our campus is open at all times and days of the week. Which is really a indicator of the investment of the students, teachers, and staff; they want to be here even when they are not forced to be here.
My Project
I've used sections of the novel before and the students were gripped by the stories and genuinely engaged. Not only are they learning American history and the soldier's experience in Vietnam written through the perspective of a Vietnam War veteran, they are learning to enjoy reading for the art and ideas it can offer. Students learn and, especially in our community of active military families, can begin to understand emotions and under-goings of soldiers before, during, and after military service. My students need a class set of the book The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien to be used for reading, study, and discussion.
The donation of this class set will foster appreciation for those who have served as well as challenge perspectives on war and "textbook" history.
Students will be exposed to and read about the complexity of emotions such as sadness in the midst of joy and joy in the midst of extreme hardship. It will offer a much needed entry into understandings they most-likely encounter and deal with now and will encounter later in their lives, long after.
