Mrs. Kistler from San Antonio TX is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need encouragement to read! I am kicking off the year with a Treasure Hunt to find 20 of these books, called "The Testing," and play a game called Read it Forward.
Libraries provide the Freedom to Read. My students have NOT had this freedom for over a decade. Our school library was censored and I would like to reverse this trend and expose kids to coveted titles, like The Testing. My kids deserve the Freedom to Read!
I am the school librarian of a high-poverty middle school with 900 students.
My kids are predominantly Hispanic and African American. Sadly, the most popular book in our library is an elementary title. This needs to change! I am new to the school. In August, I want to engage them with an amazing Treasure Hunt for the latest coveted fiction book called The Testing. I want to give them back their Freedom to Read and engage them in a game to Read It Forward. In the book, the main character is a girl named Cia and her dad tells her to trust no one. But in our school, as their librarian, I want my students to learn they can trust me to watch out for their reading rights!
I am requesting twenty copies of the new Young Adult Fiction title called The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau. The world-building in her book is mesmerizing. The main character must pass a series of tests to survive her dystopian world. I want to get the attention of my students by creating a Treasure Hunt. By solving clues, they will earn a copy of The Testing to read, BUT it is NOT their book to keep. Instead, they will play Read It Forward. Once they finish the book, they write their thoughts on the inside cover and give it to a friend to read. The books will continue to be passed around the whole first semester and then we will have a celebration of reading for the kids who passed The Testing, i.e. all of the kids who chose to read the book. With twenty copies in play, every student should have a chance to play.
My project is important because my kids are not readers.
They are not readers because their school library has been censored. They have not had the Freedom to Read which is promised to each student by the American Association of School Librarians. This project will give them back this gift of reading!
