My students need Microsoft Surface Laptops so our science classroom can utilize current technology to replicate how professional scientists work and think. They will keep a digital Science Journal/Notebook, perform laboratory experiments, and computer based testing.
Curious, driven, mold-able. The young minds I teach are ready and eager to learn about science.
Over half our school is low income.
My kids come from mixed families. Their guardians consist of two parents, one parent, grandparents, aunts, sisters, foster parents, etc. They have no siblings, one siblings, many siblings. Sometimes they live with their siblings, other times they are separated. Their homes consist of 5 bedroom homes with pools to studio apartments they share with many other family members.
Our school truly contains variety in abundance. This is true of the world we live in too!
My Project
Technology is here, right now, today. The kids are well adept at navigating social media but lack skills in using technology to learn facts, type an essay, use a spreadsheet, or organize and express thoughts cohesively.
Science is based on the idea we make observations and then inferences based on those observations.
A true scientist keeps track of this material in a notebook. Today the notebook is digitized and uses many different programs to accomplish a variety of functions. They use their notebook to organize their thoughts, keep track of successes and failures, and reflect upon their work.
In the classroom, giving my kids access to the Microsoft Surface Laptops and teaching them how to think scientifically will provide their future selves with advantages. These advantages will help them become citizens who can use technology not just to update their social media, but to have a useful impact on their daily life and maybe even the world.
