My students need ink to publish their writing assignments, headphones to control the noise level of their Chromebooks, and a barcode scanner and label printer to organize our leveled readers and check their availability.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I serve as the reading interventionist at our small, rural Title I school, where 100% of our students participate in the free and reduced breakfast and lunch program. My intervention lessons are comprised of students reading and providing written responses to leveled readers. Typically, responses are written in their notebooks. This process provides a sure fire way of ensuring student work is neat, organized, and not misplaced.
However, my students have inspired (challenged) me to live a little on the wild side by adding technology into our lessons.
Using their chromebooks, students have read leveled text, completed comprehension assessments, and have written Text Dependent Analysis (TDA) responses.
My Project
I would like to further embed technology into my reading intervention lessons. First, after students have completed the final draft of their writing assignments, on the Chromebook, I would like to print it so that it can be displayed in the class or hallway, sent home to be shared with family members, or added to their literacy portfolio.
Second, as students read books online, complete written assignments, and complete other standards based activities, they need headphones so that they do not disturb or distract others.
Being able to minimize the noise level is crucial while others work independently and while I take reading records.
Finally, there are approximately 700 leveled readers in one intervention collection and I have two to maintain. Having a barcode scanner will allow me to keep the leveled readers organized and ensure none are misplaced.
