The students in my class are working diligently to overcome challenges they face due to high poverty. For them, school is one aspect of their lives that is consistent and safe. The children love to read and learn new things in math, science, and social studies; they are continually asking questions about the world around them.
In spite of many disadvantages, my students have the ability and desire to learn and to succeed in school.
Many of them are performing below grade level expectations, and it takes tremendous effort to close the achievement gap. I am continually striving to find and secure the necessary resources to inspire my students to reach their full potential.
My Project
The parents of my third-graders want their children to succeed in school, but they are not fully confident in their ability to help them at home. Bringing the parents into the classroom allows them to take an active role in their children's education while providing guidance and direct support from the teacher.
By "turning the tables," parents can facilitate students' learning while being learners themselves in the sometimes overwhelming 21st century curriculum.
When parents are involved at school, the performance of all the children at school, not just their own, tends to improve. Student achievement increases with well planned and purposeful family partnerships.
Parents and grandparents will participate with the students in a myriad of learning activities, including literacy, math, and science, learning along with their children. The in-class experiences will carry beyond the classroom walls and serve as a foundation for continued discussion and related follow up activities to complete at home.
