Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a unique public high school where minority and first-generation students have the opportunity to earn an Associates degree simultaneously with their high school diploma in only four years. Our school has been nationally recognized twice with the prestigious National Blue Ribbon Award in 2012 and 2018. More importantly, 90% of our students attend colleges and universities across the country, including many elite institutions, which is well above the 55% district-wide rate. We are making great strides in closing the achievement gap.

To improve student success, we want to compliment the school's strong STEM focus with a deeper engagement with the arts.

With a curriculum devoid of art courses, I provide a place for students to expand their talents in the library makerspace. In tandem with our literary magazine club, the makerspace offers students the opportunity to create, promote and encourage artistic experiences for the whole school.

My Project

During the month of October, the students helped in writing a DonorChoose grant, which we successfully secured two Cricut die-cutting machines and one Cricut heat press to jumpstart the Make Space on our campus. Currently, the students are learning to use and design on the Cricut software, in addition to producing small projects benefiting the school or their class assignments. To date, the students created 24 custom sashes for a district initiative. In fact, it was this small project that planted the seed in their heads to provide a much-needed service for the school, creating custom designed products and learn the fundamentals of a small business.

Our goal is to be a self-sustaining Maker Space operation and for students to learn the basic principles of a small business.

Seeing how fast we went through materials, students became concerned on how we would continue to have the materials for the machine. With this problem, they decided to create a "non-profit" business to produce finished products for clubs and teachers, or even the local community. To start, my students put together a business plan, created a product request form and a product invoice for customers. They would charge a nominal fee to cover only the cost of the materials. This club would help the students learn basic economic principles, creative expression, and how to run a business. These are real life skills that are often overlooked in the traditional classroom.
