Our students are resilient, but the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy stopped us all in our tracks. We are thankful that our students and staff are safe, but the experience has been difficult.
We're getting back to normal routines, but would love to bring the joy of musical theater to them soon!
We are a Title I, New York City public school in Queens, where nearly 60% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Our school's high poverty or high need classification has never stopped our students from doing their best.
Our diverse community is quite international with almost 70% of our students coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth of our students receive extra support for learning English. We also provide communication materials to parents in 4 home languages (English, Chinese, Spanish & Korean).
My Project
Our school community has been working together to raise funds through bake sales, raffles and even used book sales to support an arts enrichment program this school year. Unfortunately, we're still a long way from our goal.
Mr. Alastair King from Young Audiences New York (YANY) has worked with students at our school in past years, but we just don't have the budget for this year. Kids and adults love learning from Mr. Alastair and we appreciate any help you can give us toward this program.
This request would fund a musical theater residency for my class of Kindergarten students:
- 12-sessions of musical theater workshops for students
- culminating event for them to share their performance with family and peers
- planning and professional development for teachers to ensure that the learning in the residency connects to learning in the classroom so students can have an in-depth experience
Kids will engage on so many levels and explore subject areas through music (math, social studies)!
Our role as educators is to support the development of the WHOLE child.
All children deserve educational experiences that enrich their lives.
Musical theater workshops would be especially rewarding for my students now. They will blossom from these opportunities to express themselves and share their feelings in a physical way. Music has a knack for getting kids out of their shells and giving them a new way to show how they feel. Dance and movement will add to their learning and ways to have fun.
