Every year I'm blown away by just how special my students are, and at how eager they are to learn. I'm astounded at how my kids are able to come into my room ready to learn when their world at home may be falling apart. Whether it's parents having no job, being evicted from their home, or a parent going or getting out of prison. Our school provides a safe environment for its kids and it shows when they show up early to help/hang out in the classroom, and former students are always stopping by to chat and share how their new school year is going.
From the materials, in this project, the students get to build and decorate a small car that is powered by the sun through a solar panel. They then get to test and modify the car to make it as fast as possible. We then set up several courses on the playground to race the student's cars. Testing how fast they are on flat ground, how fast they are going up an incline, and even reversing the polarity of the motor so they race backward.
This project will make a difference for several reasons.
First, it is the culminating activity to our unit on the sun. It's something the kids always look forward to doing once we complete the unit. Second, it's a great team building activity. The kids always like competing to see who can make the best looking and the fastest car.
