Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Sometimes all it takes is a small opportunity to change the course of a young child's life. At our school, we give our students a head start to pursue endeavors after high school by helping them receive their associate's degree at the same time as their high school diploma.
Many of our students are first-generation college students who have sacrificed being in a traditional high school with extracurricular activities such as sports and band in order to get a head start on their college degree.
Our students take college courses simultaneously with their high school courses. We try to offer as many activities as possible in order for our students to find a balance between their rigorous academics and extracurricular activities. Our staff tries to provide our students with fun activities that help them unwind, relax and decompress. In addition, we are doing everything we can to help our school grow and have the best learning environment and experiences for our students.
My Project
Our student council is a group of high school scholars who have the ability to lead and better not only our school, but our community. Our Student Council is still young and our organization does not have a lot of funds. Though we have limited funds, our students have been able to use DonorsChoose and its partner funding opportunities to fund projects for our school and other schools in our district.
This group of young students is able to make a great impact in the community and strive towards a better learning environment and a growing sense of family.
Many of our students do not have the means to attend state conferences where they can learn from their peers. Over 65% of our students are economically disadvantaged. Much of our district is still very rural and many of our students live in mobile homes and in flood-prone areas. We want to provide our students a chance to experience different opportunities through clubs and other extracurricular activities like field trips and conferences.
Our students know they will take away so much from this conference. Our young Student Council will learn ideas for fundraising, for community service and development, and for leadership and communication programs.
Students who will attend, will bring back what they learned and share it with our other members and our school. They will create binders and present these new ideas. In addition, our students attending will also learn to network and build relationships with their counterparts from other schools.
Our growing student council and school will definitely benefit from attending this conference and learning from more established student councils from all over our state. Our students know how much they can take away from this experience and opportunity.
