My Project

I teach an exceptional group of gifted students at my school! I use project-based learning as a way to show them how real-world experiences connect to educational standards. My students get to apply their learning in hands-on, real-world projects and see that what they learn in school is important.

One of these projects is called The Suitcase Project, where students learn more about the Holocaust and its effect on millions of people who were targeted for their beliefs.

The students research a victim of the Holocaust and work to create a suitcase and artifacts that represent who that person was in order to share their stories and keep their memory alive.

For this project, after researching their Holocaust victim, the students use paints and brushes to create a historically accurate suitcase. They use items like felt and fabric to create clothing their person might have worn during WWII or the flag of their homeland. They use modeling dough to create 3-d items like food or other objects that represent who their person was and where they were from. This project is such an important lesson in empathy and compassion, and students use these kinds of art materials to create special artifacts that uniquely represent the person they have learned about.
