The Study of Living Things, Living in the Classroom

Help me give my students concrete living organisms (fish and insects) to observe, care for, and learn science from rather than learning science from abstract pictures.

My Project

Kindergarten students need concrete tools to better understand abstract thoughts and processes. These living insects, fish, and plant and animal kits we have requested will enable us to transition from learning from abstract pictures to learning from the concrete examples of living things in helping us meet our science standards. We need to observe living things not pictures.

What better way to understand science than to live science?

The students will actively care for and learn from the requested butterflies, fish, ants, and ladybugs and their habitats through observation. These materials will allow us to learn the following science standards of Living Things and the scientific processes and patterns surrounding living things. Students will use these items requested to observe in order to: 1. Ask questions or define problems by identifying observable patterns and to organize and classify factors that influence relationships, 2. Investigate cause and effect relationships, 3. Analyze and interpret data to create interpretations of living things and relationships, 4. Engage in argument from evidence collected, and finally, 5. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information using appropriate scientific evidence from observing living things.

We want to observe, care for, and learn from living organisms to better understand the concepts surrounding survival of living things, how they are impacted by the world around them, and how they impact the world they live in. Books and posters are not living things and make it difficult to observe living organisms as they are.
