The Study of Life: Future Scientists Edition

My students need variable micropipettes, pH buffers, and hands-on manipulatives to study life.

This project expired on August 25, 2018.

My Students

I teach AP Biology and Human Anatomy at a rural Title I high school in central Georgia. Our school serves a population of students with diverse backgrounds and interests. My students are talented, involved in their community, brilliant, and clamoring for true, hands-on experiential learning. Every day, they surprise me by asking thoughtful questions, engaging in rigorous discussion with one another over complex topics, or sending me articles over the newest discoveries relating to medical science.

My students are students who care so much about getting a quality science education, they literally petition to get the classes they deserve.

To me, that says a lot. This upcoming year will be the first year we have offered AP Biology since the curriculum redesign, and my students are more than excited. My students work hard every day to be their best selves and so I would like to show them how wonderful and vast the world of science can be.

My Project

The items included in this project have a variety of uses for my students. Using the micropipettes, my students will have the opportunity to work as true scientists by investigating restriction enzymes and gel electrophoresis via the analysis of precut lambda DNA. The pH buffers will be used in several investigations including: the analysis of oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange among living things and simulated patient urinalysis. The agar cubes will be used to visualize cell sizes and investigate why most living things aren't just one big cell. Even the green tea will help my students interact with science, as they will use this to study cell signaling pathways and the nervous system.

Not only will these materials aid in building scientific understanding of complex topics, but using these materials in hands-on investigations will also give them the skills to perform experiments at the college level and the confidence to explore science in its realest form.

Science cannot be learned solely from a textbook, but needs to be visualized in order to be realized. With the funding of this project, I will be overjoyed to share the love of science with my students, students who deserve nothing but the BEST science experiences.
