This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are special because through their district, they all get a wonderful opportunity to learn a musical instrument. Music is a universal language and it speaks to every soul. During covid, many of my students were not able to receive their instruments or the proper instrumental music instruction due to different forms of distant learning. They also lacked the community that comes from being in a musical ensemble. Now that we all are back together, we can learn how to play our instruments. Playing an instrument develops a new way of expression through sound. It can become an outlet to help relieve stress and connect with others.

My students are at a Title I school where 100% of the students quality for free and reduced lunch.

About 90% of my students receive a district instrument because it is financially a burden to most families to pay a monthly fee of $20-$50 through a regular local music store. Because students already have a difficult time affording an instrument, they are not able to pay for the equipment that is needed to properly perform on their violins and violas. I already see that the current lack of shoulder rests is leading to incorrect playing positions and violins/violas slipping off the shoulders because there is no support and grip. It not only hinders their learning but also their enjoyment of playing.

I know these shoulder rests will drastically improve their performance and learning experience by automatically fixing their positions as shoulder rest are built ergo-dynamically to fit comfortably on their shoulders. It will reduce discomfort for the students by preventing slippage and sliding off their shoulders.
