Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to tell stories. They are true storytellers. It is exciting to hear them share their personal stories about their families. I've heard tales of "Our fishing trip"; "My sisters 15-year-old party!"; "I have a new baby brother!"; "I worked with my dad!"; and other events in their lives. They enjoy sharing their stories with each other and with adults.
Incorporating new technological skills with literacy skills to to improve storytelling skills can lead to great improvements in my student’s academic skills.
It can also pave a path to improved literacy skills and great careers. My students are individuals with Specific Learning Disabilities. Many of my students come from single parent homes. My students go to an inner city school which receives "Title One" Funds and our school participate in a free meals program. With a majority of our students being Second Language Learners; it is essential that they improve literacy skills. My storytellers want to go to High School and College. They would love to tell their stories through multi-modality and multi-media activities.
My Project
My students love to tell stories; they are true storytellers. In this project we will expand their storytelling skills into classroom and school projects. My students will be able to document, record, illustrate and bring their personal spin on community and class building activities using multi-media technology in their projects and presentations.
Student teams will be a given starter projects that is classroom based (ex: how to build a mouse trap car; how to build a spaghetti tower; or how to build a foam tube roller coaster).
The second project will be school based (topic ex: water quality on campus; where can we get the most exposure to germs; or what grows in the school garden). If we are lucky; we will expand the third project to home and community.
My students will be able to use various media devices (cameras, IPad, lab tops and the desk top) to capture pictures, illustration, and videos of the process of completing the projects and activity events. Students will be able to use the Photoshop and Art computer program and the computer desktop to edit and enhance their multi-media projects.
For my students who have very low speech production; we will use the Fairytale Storytelling Kits as their first step in story telling. The storytelling kit will bridge supported storytelling into independent story telling activities. Additionally; students will use the IPADs and Computer to address the need of support in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing support.
My students who have stronger technology skills will be able to improve skills and provide support to their peers in the area of multi-media technology. All student will be on the road to improving their Storyteller's Path by Unraveling the Mystery of Literacy through technology.
