Help me give my students lots of books about the Holocaust and World War II to give them more perspectives on this time period while we are reading "Number the Stars".
I work in an amazing arts integrated public school in Kentucky. Our students audition and are accepted into our school for creative and performing arts. This makes for a very unique and wonderful teaching and learning environment. Though all our students have the commonality of being identified as talented in their focus arts areas, we have a diverse population of students with a wide range of academic interests and abilities that come from all over our city.
My students are highly motivated and hardworking children- Because of their diverse educational backgrounds, they have all had different experiences than each other, but providing engaging and real-world experiences allows my students the ability to teach and learn from one another and achieve success.
In my classroom, we think and wonder, wonder and think, each and every day. We work to develop empathy and gain awareness of the world and its people
My Project
We already have been immersed in learning about Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. We are currently reading "Number the Stars", have read non-fiction accounts about the history and people of that time period. I am looking to add lots of picture books and stories to our classroom library to further our understanding of the events during WWII and the Holocaust.
My students will use the stories of these Holocaust survivors and protectors to enrich our understanding and projects for this unit.
They will work in small groups to discuss and develop their projects that will be displayed in our school to help educate other students on the Holocaust and what it cost humanity.
They have been learning about the area, people, and cultures during this time period. I want them to have lots of experiences reading different authors and people's perspectives through all of these different picture and photographic books. They will create projects about what they learn. This is a cross-curricular project that will then be shared with the entire school community.
