I am looking forward to inviting students on a stock market journey!
During the 2005-2006 school year, I will invite students from various grades (2nd through 4th) to join The Stock Market Club. We will meet on a weekly basis during lunch time to analyze our investments.
Each student will begin with $5,000, and he/she will choose to invest it in 2 stocks. We will use the internet (YahooFinance, CBS MarketWatch, etc.) to learn the company profile, daily closings, and forecasts.) Once students choose their stocks, they will track earnings and losses for a semester. All information will be recorded on Excel spreadsheets. At the end of the semester, students will have the opportunity to present their results in a PowerPoint presentation, and we will celebrate the highest earning investors. In the PowerPoint presentation, students will display information about the company, the market, and the individual stock performance throughout the semester. Afterwards, students may opt to continue investing or invite another classmate to the club.
We have a computer and access to the internet in our classroom, but we need a multimedia projector to view information that is online, in Excel, or in PowerPoint. Since we will be meeting as a group of 10 to 15 students, I would like it for all students to easily view the calculations, graphs, and images. Most importantly, when their presentations are complete, they will be able to project it for students, teachers, and parents to view.
I am lucky enough to teach 20 3rd graders at The Twenty-First Century Academy for Community Leadership (a.k.a. P.S. 210) in Washington Heights. As a dual language teacher, I teach in English and Spanish, so students develop fluency and pride in both languages. Furthermore, we seek to instill a sense of citizenship in our students. I believe that my students will enjoy the freedom and opportunities which the stock market offers investors.
When I was in middle school, my computer teacher introduced us to the stock market in a similar manner. It was an engaging way to practice computer literacy, study current events, and introduce us to finance. I hope to offer my students the same opportunity, and I look forward to your help!
