Help me give my students drumsticks in order to perform diverse percussion such as buckets, and classroom keyboards to give a hands-on learning experience!
Going into my second year of teaching these students, I am excited to get back and see their faces, eager to learn and energized to embrace music! My students from a public charter school in Cleveland, Ohio are in grades K-8 and never cease to surprise me with their willingness to explore new ideas and become the best human beings they can be.
In the short time I've known them, my student's love and acceptance of all genres and styles of music has blossomed in a way that brings me immense joy as a music educator!
My students have embraced learning music in multiple ways whether singing, dancing, listening, analyzing, or playing, but I believe that with the proper tools, their music education can be boosted, allowing for a diverse music education experience.
My Project
A study done by Rauscher and Lupan found that young children who take keyboard lessons have greater abstract reasoning abilities than their peers, and that these abilities improve over time with sustained training in music. I have learned from personal experience that being introduced to the keyboard at a young age was a irreplacable experience in my music education.
By bringing keyboards and bucket drumming into my music classroom, I hope to help all students grades K-8 make visual, auditory, and physical connections of musical concepts to something they can see, touch, and perform themselves.
Bucket drumming allows for a non-traditional approach to learning rhythmic accuracy and musicianship amongst multiple performers. Who doesn't feel the urge to move when they hear the sound of a drumline? Bucket drumming will make learning and performing fun for middle school students!
