Help me give my students the tools to create and share stories of their community.

The potential each of my students have to create content that allows their audience to care a little more, think differently, and take positive action, is immense. Through their diverse experiences and passions, they possess an endless amount of curiosity and technical skill to be creative through media. They continue to be resilient in strengthening their sense of excellence in the development of essential skills associated with digital storytelling. Through digital storytelling, they find joy in sharing the experiences and reflections of those within our community. I continue to be proud of their ability to work collaboratively both inside and outside the classroom to discover the strengths of one another and of our community. My students love for learning, creating, and drive to inspire impact beyond just their peers, inspires me to keep learning and growing right beside them.
The Media Learning Lab, aims to provide the resources for my students to deepen their passion for creating and sharing. I continue to see an increased level of intrinsic motivation and quality when products are made for an authentic audience. The listed items will be used to support students in their ability to prototype, test, and market solutions for community clients. Through STEM, students will be able to address their chosen issue. Using the design thinking approach, students would focus on a local challenge and design a product (media and/or 3D print). Students will need to empathize with users by identifying scientific concepts for research. After research, they will utilize the 3D printers to create prototypes and engineer designs that would fit the needs of their users. As mathematicians, they would need to understand algebraic operations to calculate the size of their designs. The resources provided will be stored in a safe space on my school campus that will serve as the lab for creating their products. Clients would also be invited to the lab for the students to give their product pitches and receive feedback on product improvements. Through drones, video, photography, VR, 360 video, green screens, and 3D printing, students would have the unique opportunity of not only creating their original products but more importantly share their products with an authentic audience. The regular practice of designing and sharing would instill the career and community skills of creating with empathy, communicating with confidence, and collaborating with inclusivity.
