My students need audiovisual equipment in order to effectively grasp the scientific concepts throughout the school year. The speakers and webcam are perfect for this.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Frankly, science can be boring. For some, they can't find interest. However, when a creative and motivated teacher uses music to teach planets, Skype to teach sick students at home, and other multimedia, then our 21st Century students will be more involved in learning and become future leaders.
My students are 8th grade gifted children.
We are in a Title I school, which means that even though we have the normal range of intellects that any public school has, the majority of our students come from low income families. The amount of academic enrichment at home is low. In my gifted class, I teach chemistry, physics, astronomy, and environmental science. All of these subjects can be enhanced with the use of audiovisual equipment. The students lack cultural enrichment and many are absent due to sickness and poor home lives. If I can literally connect the classroom to these kids, then we can make a rich difference in their lives.
My Project
My students are smart. These gifted kids will be the leaders of tomorrow. However, the current system removes enrichment from lives, lowers expectations, and is actually leaving this minority group unchallenged and uninterested in science, mathematics, and engineering. The computer speakers will allow me to enhance their lessons by providing cultural stimulation through music and science fiction literature. One example of an activity I use is Gustav Holst's "The Planets" to challenge the students to fit together facts from our Astronomy lessons with classical music written for the planets. The webcam is used with the Skype program that will allow students who are home with illnesses to take part in the lessons, labs, and other activities we do on a daily basis and not miss a beat. Missing assignments and overabundance of absences are the main reason students fail classes. If we can make a difference in just one child's life, it is worth the effort, time, and money.
I tell my students to imagine they have a switch on the back of their heads, not labeled "ON" and "OFF," but "FIXED" and "GROWTH." I was teaching them about growth mindset and how they'll need to lock that switch on "GROWTH" and never move it back.
Only this way will they become the successful people they have dreamed they will be. If we can get our children to realize that they are not finished learning and that we haven't given up on their abilities, then we've accomplished something grand.
