This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Sugar, spice, and everything nice! When you enter our classroom, you are getting a taste of a special gumbo. My gumbo contains a mix of cultures such as African-American, Hispanic, Afghan, Hmong, and Native Hawaiian to make a savory and decadent class. I am honored to teach a very diverse group of kids.
I work at a school with a high poverty rate in Sacramento, California.
Many of my students are learning English as a second language. We help students strengthen their reading fluency and become literate with a new language, as well. Each student is an important ingredient of this gumbo, but we need the tools to make this taste great; we need the tools to make them successful.
My Project
The true beauty of music is that it connects people. Music not only connects people, it also connects learning. The recorders will be used as a supplemental tool to develop major content areas.
Students will learn the fundamentals of music and life.
Gradually, they will identify, read, and play musical notes and signs by sight. Sight reading skills are required in English language arts/reading to generate fluency. Also, students will develop a trained ear, which translates into listening skills that are critical for comprehension and collaborative conversations. Naturally, the musicians will perform different genres and cultural musical arrangements at school functions. With continuous exposure to different cultures, students will continue their path as global citizens by increasing their knowledge and awareness of cultures that exist in our school, community and world. In addition, learning a musical instrument builds teamwork, confidence and responsibility.
These recorders not only teach music, they will also teach supporting skills like sight reading, listening, teamwork, responsibility, build student confidence and awareness of other cultures. Theses skills are vital in supporting standards-aligned content and developing life skills.
