My students need some accessories (cover, charger, stylus) for an iPad, which will be used to address social skill deficits, academic needs and personal development.
Every time I hear a student say "Ah haa" or look up at me with a keen eye, I am reminded of my passion for teaching others. The IPAD makes me go "Ah haa" because of its ability to reach students and enhance skills through a multitude of applications.
This year, I, along with a 7th grade teacher and 3 paraeducators opened an 6th/7th grade Autism Resource Services classroom in Maryland.
We work with high-functioning autism students who attend public school. Currently, 9 students receive this service.
My students want to be successful and strive to meet the demands in school. Unfortunately, some skills that are innate to others take explicit instruction and repetition before generalization can occur.
My students need engaging resources that support instruction on social interactions and provide training on personal development. They learn best when lessons are interactive and include visuals and media. Lastly, we noticed a trend that anytime technology is used motivation and assessment scores go up.
My Project
The IPAD has over 300,000 applications that address peoples interests and needs. There are applications to help with social skills development like making eye contact or engaging in conversation. There are speech and language applications that encourage language development through interactive games. Fine motor skills can be addressed through writing and drawing activities. Students can also use the media, music, and video features to engage in topics of interest. This resource has an endless amount of components that make it very functional and engaging for students with autism.
My students with autism learn in unique and individualized ways.
Highly engaging techniques and resources enhance instruction and make generalizations occur quickly. As we try to prepare them to become 21st century global citizens we look for effective approaches that lead to growth. The IPAD will be a great contribution to our classroom and give my students the chance to meet their full potential in the areas where help is needed most.
