This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in our classroom are a hard-working, bucket-filling, scholarly group. We call ourselves The Smithsonians. We represent the diversity of our city - we are African American, Asian, Filipino, Latino and Arabic. About 80% of our students fall below or close to the poverty line. About half of our students our English language learners.
While we come from a wide-range of backgrounds, we all come together in our classroom to learn and grow in our "happy place." Please help us shine our brightest every day of the year.
My Project
My class loves art. We have a Smithsonian Art Gallery to display our fabulous creations! We just need a little help getting all the materials needed to fill our showcase. We would like to use watercolor sets and painting materials (the brushes and no-spill cups) to create a personalized directed drawings and paintings each month. We will display them all on the watercolor paper in our gallery for viewers to enjoy! The aprons will help keep us neat and clean as we work.
Art is so important for our students, affording them the opportunity to be creative and express themselves artistically, improve visual analysis skills, and make better critical judgments.
In years past, we had an art studio at our school site, where students worked with an art teacher each week. When there were cuts to the budget, there went our art program. But I would like to reignite the flames of fantastic art at our site, beginning with my students.
