Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an overcrowded school in Chicago. We cannot afford to buy additional materials that go beyond the basic textbooks. I teach in a high poverty school in which all of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are caring, kind, and nurturing to one another, which makes my heart full of happiness as their teacher!
They love coming to school and exploring the world around them! Our school motto is "Building a Community of Learners." As a school, we strive to focus on the whole self and making sure each and every students' needs are met both academically and social-emotionally.
My fourth grade students have not hit puberty yet, but most are caregivers and supporters of their younger siblings while having to balance managing their own personal needs whether it be academic, emotional, or self-care.
My Project
My students do their best to come to school every day to learn and get the most out of each instructional school day. The winters can be tough in Chicago when it comes to sickness, and it is important for our classroom to be clean and disinfected often. Some of my students have a difficult time with personal hygiene, but I'm just grateful that they come to school and have a willingness to learn.
I want to help my students' learning bloom by providing them with basic essentials including personal hygiene items to nurture their needs as children as well as learners.
Each child who is on my class roster isn't just a student in my classroom, they become part of my heart. It is my mission to give them the best care possible. My students need personal hygiene items such as deodorant, toothbrushes, and toothpaste to help model proper self-care so my students can "smell like roses." This smell will carry over to a clean classroom. My students need kleenex, paper towels, and disinfectant wipes to keep away the germs and snacks to keep their tummies full to help them engage in learning. Wiping away the germs and making their tummies full will help our classroom smell like my students are ready to learn with a healthy and clean environment. Lastly, my students need a pencil sharpener, pencils, copy paper, and colored ink for our printer to keep our classroom fully stocked with love in order for my students to be prepared and be able to celebrate their learning in a colorful way. Lets be honest, having a fresh sharpened pencil does have a wonderful smell to it, even if it doesn't actually smell like roses!
