This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My twenty-two students are bright, and interesting and funny! They are all different shapes and sizes and come in many colors. My beautiful nine and ten year olds, constantly surprise me with how much they know, and want to know. They are eager and passionate learners! Most of my students are disadvantaged, so the services my school provides are critical to their well being.
The WAIT LIST to read the MOST DESIRABLE BOOKS in my classroom library is too long to get through.
As a result of only having one copy of each title, some of my student's never have their turn. They like for me to randomly draw their names to put them on the lists. As you might imagine, there are cheers in the beginning, and tremendous groans from the kids drawn last.
My Project
Fifteen, shiny, new book titles will make all the difference in my classroom. My greatest desire as a classroom teacher is to instill the joy of reading into the hearts of my students. While they are in my care for 180 days, my students read for pleasure at every opportunity.
Like most of us, my students gravitate to the newest, most attractive looking books on our classroom shelves.
The Sunshine State Readers Award Books for 2018-2019 include titles such as Dragons and Marshmallows by Asia Citro. This book has a 5 Star rating with 172 reviews on Amazon. That means kids love it! Since kids love it, and because it's a Battle Book, students will most certainly have difficulty finding it available in our school library at the moment they are ready and willing to read it. My students deserve the opportunity to fall in love with the most popular books. They also deserve to have access to the materials used in our county's Battle of the Books Competition. I know wonderful things will happen in my classroom when we have our own set of Sunshine State Readers.
