Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a classroom that provides wonderful opportunities for my students with special needs to be included with their typical peers. I am responsible for 10 students. However, since I work collaboratively with the general education teacher and her students, I feel all the children in the classroom are my students regardless if they have disabilities. I love watching students with special needs learn and grow through daily "teachable moment" that comes from spontaneous peer interactions.
What makes my students special?
My students come from different social, economic and cultural backgrounds. Some have had prior preschool experience. Others may be navigating the preschool environment and accessing special education services for the first time. Through the class, students learn to make friends, to play, to make good choices, and to be responsible for their own actions. They learn they have the right to be happy and fulfilled like any other child.
Most importantly, they learn to stand up for themselves, to find their place in the world, and to feel that they are important.
My Project
Every child needs to experience real-life examples of the things they learn in school. My students are no different. For my students with special needs, this is even more important. They need to be exposed to learning through their senses. Their sense of sight, touch, smell, taste, and sound.
Kidspace Museum provides children age-appropriate means to learn through their senses about the world.
My students get to see real-life examples of cause and effect in action. They learn that for every action there is an equal reaction or consequence.
With your help, my students will see that learning is everywhere and that, "The sky's the limit!" They can grow and determine their own potential just as they see in nature. There is nothing they can't do.
