I am one of two 4-year-old kindergarten classes at my dream school. Last year was my first year of teaching. Starting over in your 30s as a single parent with two children and taking on the stressful career of teaching was NO JOKE but my students are worth it. My children are worth it: my own two children and the possible 24 more who pass through my classroom each year.
The children are imaginative and playful.
They are also 4 years old, so they test boundaries and ask questions about more than the topic being presented. They tell the truth, whether its that my delicious home-cooked meal looks nasty to them or they hate my new hair color - don't ever dye your hair mid-year or they will freak out-save it for summer. Children tell the truth and they are our future. They deserve everything possible.
My Project
Do you remember the excitement each day when you were given the opportunity to pull out a book, get comfortable, and read? Our students get that same opportunity each and every day during reading workshop. However, our classroom libraries need your support. We need a variety of texts that cover different genres, levels, and topics for our students. Every day during reading workshop the students are taught a mini-lesson as a whole group. Then they are given plenty of time to engage independently in reading a variety of texts while the teacher conferences one-on-one or with small groups.
Having a variety of texts to read during reading workshop is imperative to helping our students grow as readers and writers.
The texts requested within this project were handpicked to meet the needs of the students within our classroom, their levels, and their interests. With your support, our students will have a variety of books to choose from on a daily basis to meet their needs as they grow as readers.
