Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach high school students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities in a Transition Learning Center, which focuses on functional academics, job training, daily living skills and community access/safety.
My goal is to foster independence and develop vocational skills to help the students lead a productive life after high school.
The students in my program participate in these training activities as part of their overall education. They also run a coffee shop for teachers and staff in the school building, as well as prepare mailings for the school. Additionally, they travel to offsite jobs and work with our community partners.
My Project
My students with special needs require real-life experiences to practice vocational, daily living and communication skills. This shredding service will supplement my students' job skills training curriculum, while providing a valuable resource for staff.
The equipment requested will allow my students to provide an in-school shredding service to teachers needing to properly dispose of sensitive material while fostering job skills, independence and responsibility.
The students will need to practice communication skills when speaking with teachers regarding their needs to shred documents as well as practice daily living skills learning how to use the shredder, maintain the equipment, and procedures to dispose of the documents.
