The Shamrock Project is a school-to-work transition program for young adults with disabilities. Guided by their Individual Education Plans, my 7 interns all have paid employment out in the community and work toward achieving their goals. They have developed friendships and call themselves The Shamrock Family (The Sham Fam). We work on soft skills and independent living skills to prepare them for the world of work and living on their own. We discuss how difficult "adulting" is. Our program is housed in a portable and they are responsible for keeping it clean.
My students plan meals, grocery shop, cook, clean and do laundry.
They also work on budgeting and bill paying. Everyone who wears a uniform washes it at the portable. The goal of our program is 16 to 20 hours of paid employment per week.
My Project
The Shamrock Project helps young adults with disabilities transition from school to the world of work. We focus on soft skills that they need to master in order to be successful in the workplace. We also focus on independent living skills such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting, bill paying and laundry.
My interns utilize Chromebooks for in-person and virtual learning but it is distracting without headphones.
This project will enhance their learning by allowing them to focus. The printer and the file cabinet will allow for the printing and secure storage of required legal documents outlining their educational goals.
