Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Books can take us to places to far away places! Help my students experience a new region, culture, and political situation with a single novel. Reading is an integral way to expand an individuals world view.
My students attend a public school in a low-income neighborhood, and nearly all of my students qualify for free/reduced lunches.
Nearly all students enter their 10th grade year reading at or below grade level. As a result many students are reluctant readers, so it can be challenging to hold their interest with novels. All of them have chosen to attend our multicultural high school. In our curriculum we try to expose students to issues and ideas from all around the world. Many of our students are immigrants or first generation Americans, so they themselves bring great diversity of experience to the classroom. They are interested in learning about varied cultures, and instinctively compare their own struggles and experiences with those characters appearing in novels. Some favorite novels of my students have included Night by Elie Wiesel and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie.
My Project
Based on our students' past interests in novels that are rooted in unique cultural experiences we have chosen to add The Shadow Lines to our curriculum. The Shadow Lines draws on the daily lives of several characters living during turbulent times in India, particularly in Calcutta and Delhi. In using this novel, we would work to supplement and expand the students' discussion of social issues and struggling communities beyond those that they already know first-hand. Without the inclusion of this novel our 10th grade English curriculum overlooks an important region of the world, and starves our students of an opportunity to make connections and comparisons between their own experience and others' experiences around the world.
By donating to this project you are in effect buying my students a ticket to explore Calcutta, Delhi, and London.
You are sending them on an adventure that will challenge and expand their world view. A novel like this will show my students a new world, and it will emphasize the supreme power of literature.
