This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are all second and third graders in a neighborhood that struggles economically. About one hundred percent of our students qualify for free lunches and breakfast. That, however, does not diminish their excitement for learning, especially if you incorporate things they like doing.
They are smart and very capable students with a true love of learning through real experiences.
The economic challenges do, however, have an impact on what they have available to help them learn. These are changing times and we have to constantly look for ways to not only keep students engaged, but also build their skills to prepare for potential future careers. We know that the future will require critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but it also requires a stronger background and understanding of science and technology. My students love hands-on learning.
My Project
Our kids, staff and family need recyclable baskets for storing their fruit and veggie pickings when they pick from the garden. Right now they are washing out old pots from plants we bought at the garden centers.
We need to keep the pots to start plants in the green house early in the spring.
These recyclable baskets are just the right thing to put our picked tomatoes and peppers in when they are working in the garden. Its what the farmers markets use.
The milk crates will be used in the sheds and in the greenhouse for shelving to store things. The fact that they are open on all sides make them perfect for holding seed pots when we start planting in the green house. The will let the excess water drain away.
