Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a computer class called Visual Communications. I have over 145 students. It breaks my heart when these students work so diligently on their self-portrait projects and are not able to take a printed copy home to show their families. I need ink and paper for my classroom ink jet printer.
At my school, we have a Visual Arts and Performing Arts academy, which my class is a part of.
My class is very creative and allows students to express themselves artistically through more than 22 engaging projects. In a typical day in my classroom students take charge of their own learning. I use custom instructional videos (which I create) give students headphones, and they practice software skills and complete assigned projects.
My students successfully to learn how to manage their time, and stay on track, just as if they were working at a paid job. They have goals, deadlines and expectations with regards to the projects they complete. Being a career technical educator, I bring the work experience to the classroom.
My favorite quote is...Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will understand, Author, Shin Lee.
This so sums up my class and this project! They are fully engaged in creating a portrait of themselves.
My Project
My students love this self-portrait project. Using Adobe Illustrator CS6 on an i mac, students create a self-portrait of themselves. My budget has been slashed by almost 50% over the past 2 years and Disney CREATE last year generously funded my request for ink to enable me to print students projects. This was the first year I was able to offer every student a color print of their projects. We start this self-portrait project in the beginning of February and work on for 2 1/2 weeks.
The donation of ink and glossy paper for my classroom will improve my classroom by allowing my kids to show off their projects to their family, their friends, and even to possible employers. It is a challenging project, and I do give plenty of instruction, assistance and confidence and all my students achieve some level of success with this project. I have had students come back years later and mention that they still have their color, glossy prints of their self-portraits.
After working diligently on their projects, I so want my students to leave my classroom with tangible proof of what they have been able to achieve while enrolled in my class.
In the past, students have taken the color print-out home and the parents will call me NOT believing that their child created this amazing piece of artwork. I have parents come to back to school night, just to see their student's artwork on display.
