Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade at San Antonio Elementary School, where 76% of the students receive free lunch and 69% of the students are English Language Learners. I have just begun a unit of class time on plant life. My students are very eager to learn and are constantly asking questions that I know will be better answered and illustrated through hands-on experience!
I would like to provide each of my 20 students a pot, some soil and some seeds so that they can witness the plant life and growth process first-hand. Eighteen of my 20 students are learning English as a second language and I feel one of the best ways to energize and teach vocabulary and biological concepts, and to interpret critical cause-effect of scientific processes is to have the students grow their own plants and see the effects of the sun, water, air, insects, etc. The students will learn about the stages of plant growth, natural plants vs. control plants (through the use of no water and/or no light), and the different parts of a plants. The students will be able to grow different types of flowering plants and study the conditions for fostering optimum health and growth. The plants will be used to enhance the “living, learning, and growing” environment in the classroom and the students can also take their plants home to share with their families.
The majority of my students come from households with limited incomes, and they would welcome caring for a living, growing thing of their own. The flowering plants from this initial project will be the seeds that inspire the enthusiasm, learning, and knowledge that I know all 100 of the first graders at my school would be interested in sharing and learning for years to come! Thank you for your support!
